Meet China’s Newest Diplomats - The Golden Monkeys!

China’s famous panda diplomacy may soon have a new face as golden monkeys arrive at European zoos, representing diplomatic relations between China and other nations.

Meet China’s Newest Diplomats - The Golden Monkeys!

China’s golden guests

China’s rare golden snub-nosed monkeys have made their first trip to Europe!

These monkeys, which are famously known for their bright golden fur and sky-blue faces, are found only in the cold mountain forests of central and southwest China. Now, they have been sent to ZooParc de Beauval in France and Pairi Daiza Zoo in Belgium.

This event is an important part of China’s efforts to build [[diplomatic ties::Official relationships or connections between two countries, usually to maintain peace, trade, or cooperation.]] with other countries.

What is Panda Diplomacy?

For many years, China has followed something called “panda diplomacy.” This means sending or [[lending::The act of giving something, like money or animals, to someone or another country for a period of time with the expectation it will be returned.]] giant pandas to other countries to show peace and friendship.

The idea started in the 1950s and became very popular in the 1970s, when China sent pandas to the United States and Japan.

These pandas lived in foreign zoos for a few years and helped people learn about protecting animals while strengthening relationships between countries.

The new diplomats

Now, China is doing the same with its golden snub-nosed monkeys.

In April 2025, three monkeys arrived in France during the 60-year friendship celebration between China and France. Another three reached Belgium in May 2025.

Before meeting visitors, they stayed in [[quarantine::A period of isolation to make sure people or animals are free from disease before they mix with others.]] for a month to get used to their new home safely.

Their zoo [[enclosures::Closed areas or spaces made to keep animals safely inside.]] have Chinese-style roofs, red pillars, and climbing ropes to help them feel familiar with their mountain homes in China.

How will this help the monkeys?

This project is not just about friendship. It also helps scientists study the monkeys closely and learn how to protect them.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is an [[endangered::At risk of disappearing or becoming extinct because very few of that kind are left.]] species, with only about 20,000 left in the wild. The European zoos will help spread awareness about saving forests in China, where these monkeys live.

Experts say the zoos must also make sure the animals are healthy and happy in their new environment.

More than cute faces

China’s golden monkeys are more than just cute zoo animals. They are symbols of friendship, care, and nature protection.

By sharing these rare monkeys, China shows that kindness and cooperation between countries can grow through love for others' culture and nature.

Quick revision

  • China sent golden snub-nosed monkeys to France and Belgium in 2025 as part of a cultural and diplomatic exchange.

  • This follows “panda diplomacy,” a practice started in the 1950s where China lent giant pandas to other countries to build friendship and awareness about wildlife.

  • The golden monkeys, an endangered species, will also help scientists study them and teach people about protecting forests in China.
