Morocco’s plan for street dogs.
When people watch the FIFA World Cup (WC), they cheer for their favourite teams. Morocco, which will help host the 2030 WC, is in the news for something different.
Morocco has a plan to kill up to three million street dogs. They want the streets to be cleaner for tourists. But many people do not like this plan.
The officials are poisoning the dogs, shooting them, and sometimes even hitting them. This makes many people very sad and angry.
People are speaking out!
An organisation called the International Animal Welfare and Protection Coalition (IAWPC) is trying to stop the killings. They started a campaign called “Morocco’s Ugly Secret.” Even though the government promised to stop the killings by August 2024, it is still happening.
Dr. Jane Goodall, a famous person, asked FIFA to help stop the killings. But FIFA has not done anything yet. Morocco’s own laws say that street dogs should not be killed, but the officials are still doing it.
Taking care of street dogs.
It’s important to be kind to street dogs. You can give them food and water so they are not hungry. If it’s very hot, you can help them by giving them some shade. Don’t chase them away.
If you see a hurt dog or one that is sick, tell an adult or a rescue group so they can help. Always ask an adult before you touch the dog, and wash your hands after.
