A New Tourist Place
North Korea has opened a brand-new beach [[resort::A fun place where people stay to swim, play, and relax.]], called the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone. It is the biggest beach resort in the country. The resort was opened on 24th June 2025, by Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea.
The resort is near the city of Wonsan, which is 130 kilometers away from the country's capital city, Pyongyang. It is built on the [[eastern coast::The side of a land that faces the sunrise and the ocean.]] of North Korea and covers about 5 kilometers of beach.
This new place is part of a big plan to bring more [[tourists::People who travel to see and enjoy new places.]] to North Korea.
What’s Inside the Resort?
The Wonsan-Kalma resort is very big. The resort has 54 hotels and can have up to 20,000 people at one time! It also has water parks with slides and pools, cafes, restaurants, shopping malls, sports areas, a mini-golf course, video game arcades, and even a movie theater.
The resort was made to look beautiful and modern. North Korea wants people to feel like they are visiting a famous tourist place.
New airports and train stations were also built to help people get there easily.
Why Did They Build It?
North Korea built the resort to earn foreign currency (money from other countries).
Because of [[sanctions::Rules that stop or limit trade between countries.]] (rules that stop trade), North Korea cannot sell many things to other countries. But [[tourism::The activity of people traveling for fun and sight‑seeing]] is still allowed.
In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, around 350,000 tourists visited North Korea. Most of them came from China.
Tourism is the biggest way to bring money and help the country’s economy.
Who Can Visit the Resort?
Right now, only people from North Korea can visit the beach resort.
Some Russian tourists may be allowed from July 2025. The trip will cost them around $1,840 (₹1.5 lakh) to stay in the resort for 4 nights.
Tourists must follow many rules and travel with a [[guide::A person who shows visitors around and explains things.]]. They cannot even take photos freely without permission!
What Does This Mean For North Korea?
North Korea hopes the resort will bring more money and visitors. Kim Jong Un wants to build more places like this in the future.
For now, this beach resort is a big step for the country and an attempt to [[improve::To make something better than before.]] its [[image::The way people see or think about someone or something.]] in front of the world.
