A Historical Spaceflight
In December 2025, space history changed in an important way. For the first time, a wheelchair user travelled to space. This was done by Michaela Benthaus, also known as Michi.
Her space journey was short, but it was very important. It showed that astronauts do not need to fit one fixed idea and also proved that a disability does not stop someone from achieving great things.
Who Is Michi Benthaus?
Michaela Benthaus is a German aerospace engineer. She has loved space since she was young. She enjoyed science fiction stories and real space missions.
Because of this interest, she studied mechatronics and aerospace engineering. Later, she worked with space research organisations, including the European Space Agency.
Her Journey to Space
In 2018, Michi had a mountain biking accident. The accident caused a spinal cord injury. This stopped the messages from her brain from reaching her legs.
Because of this, she could no longer move her legs and began using a wheelchair. Even after this change, Michi did not give up. She adapted to her new life and stayed connected to space science.
Why a Wheelchair Is Not a Problem
On December 20, 2025, Michi travelled to space on a rocket built by Blue Origin. The rocket was called New Shepard, which took her past the Kármán line, the boundary of space, about 100Km above Earth.
The flight lasted about ten minutes. In space, astronauts float and move using their arms. Walking is not needed. Michi’s wheelchair was not taken on board because it was not needed in zero gravity.
Why This Moment Is Important
Michi’s spaceflight changes old ideas about who can go to space. It shows that technology can be changed to include more people.
Her story teaches us that disabilities do not end dreams. Sometimes, they help people find new strengths.
