What is feminism and what was the need for it?
Feminism is a movement that believes in women being equal to men in every way. It aims at giving women the power to lead their lives on their own terms.
Throughout most of history, women were treated unfairly. They were denied the right to own property, do business, study, or even vote. In some cases, women had to take permission from their husbands or other male family members before doing any of these activities.
It is because of the feminist movement that women today can vote, go to school, choose their profession, choose their life partner, openly write, drive cars and even buy property. People who support feminism are called feminists.
What were the waves of the feminist movement?
The feminist movement is divided into different time periods, also known as “waves”. Each wave of the feminist movement had different goals.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, during the first wave of feminism, women began to realize that they must change the way in which society functions. They focused on human rights for women, such as the right to own property, the right to work, etc.
After this goal was achieved, the feminist movement focused on women’s right to vote. Soon this movement [[evolved::Developed or changed gradually over time into a more advanced or complex form.]] into demanding that everyone be allowed to vote, no matter what their gender, financial status, etc. was. This was called “universal [[suffrage::The right to vote in political elections.]]”.
The second wave of feminism occurred in the 1960s and 1970s when women started demanding same rights and jobs as men.
The third wave of the feminist movement started in the mid-1990s and focused on breaking gender [[stereotypes::Dixed and oversimplified ideas or beliefs about a group of people.]], such as the idea that women should only cook, clean, and take care of their families.
The more recent fourth wave started in 2012 and has largely focused on women using the internet to spread awareness about [[injustices::Unfair acts or situations where people are treated wrongly or without equality.]] against them.
Why should we be feminists?
Being a feminist is not about hating men or about women being better than men. Being a feminist means believing in equal rights for everyone. Some people in society still believe that women are not equal to men. It will take time to change that way of thinking.
The feminist movement is a way to make sure that women have [[access::The ability or right to approach, use, or reach something.]] to the same opportunities and rights as men.
